    The police supporters in the media would have us believe that society is getting worse, hence the rising numbers of police killings.

    I look at it from a different viewpoint. If the only tool in the box is a gun, that is the tool that you go to.

      True, but unfortunately a gun isn't the only tool, there're common sense, compassion, intelligence, kindness, just plain reluctance to kill, before you get to the real tools of tazer, and baton or just plain physical intimidation and fists. But, and it's a big but, the gun is the easiest to get to, the easiest to use, and the most permanent. Not to mention that if whoever has decided to kill for whatever reason the victim is unlikely to object. At least until now with the proliferation of the video camera.
      Murder by cop has been around as long as there've been police, and there've been police in one form or another as long as there's been people. But now it's being observed because everybody and their brother has a video camera, and the evil is right there on the TV screen or Youtube for everybody to see.
